Hi members,
Please find attached below a set of activities relating to comprehending phones messages and to filling in message forms. These worked well in a disability class. There was a lot of discussion as a group and we tried to focus on the key pieces of information that the clients need to identify for a quality phone messaage.
Hope you find it useful. Peta

I am inviting you all to look at www.voki.com and have a play. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and Lynne who posted it is using in it in the classroom environment.
Could you please reply to this post with ideas of how you could you it in your field, or perhaps suggest how others could use it?
I look forward to your ideas.

Hi all,
I have used this site previously with literacy students who are not sure what type of work they would like to pathway into. Very low level students will require support as there are a lot of questions and a lot of reading, but the class that I completed this with liked it, and completed honestly, it gave most of the students some direction

I am using this idea with my students at Intro level to Children's Services and Community Work and at Voc Prep level. Some of these students have literacy issues and low self-esteem. By creating a little avatar that speaks with your voice or theirs, students can hear how words are pronounced correctly and feel good about using technology as it is quite simple and engaging to use. The site is called Voki and the address is www.voki.com Lynne

Hi, my name is Lynne Gibb and I am an adult tutor at Coonara Community House in Melbourne's outer east. We often have adult students with literacy issues and I am always looking for tools that could help them. Often, the tools used with children can be adapted for use with adults. I am also studying the Diploma of ELearning and Peta, this is such a good idea!

I used this article and activity in an adult literacy class with a wide range of ability levels. We read as a group, discussed various aspects of the pros and cons, completed the attached questions. We had planned to work on debating and then debate the topic, but the students were not interested in participating in this kind of activity.

I am really not sure how you could use this in the classroom, but in saying that I am sure that there are a lot of adult learners who would enjoy this free software package. I thought it could be best used with tutor/student activities, and that teachers could use this program to visually record the events and goings on of the year.......

I thought this might be something of interest! Instead of the teacher being solely responsible for the reading materials, the students choose and can share their thoughts on the reading. It is really the concept that I am advocating here, and can be tailored to suit whatever group - literacy or ESL - regardless of age even though the site is aimed at children.

Hello members,
The 100 basic words workbook is something that I developed for use with very low level literacy clients with intellectual impairment, but have used them with other adult learners. I have experienced good success with these resources with a wide variety of clients.
I did need to point out that the crossword activity will need to have numbers added to the grid. I am really sorry about that. They are just written in on my hand outs. I am in the process of upgrading this resource. Will reload when I have done this.

Hi all users
It has been brought to my attention that some users are new to 'wikis' and I was asked what is approrpiate etiquette for this type of communication. For newbies to wikis, and professionals hoping to integrate wikis into their programming, I thought the following sites might be useful and informative.

I have been searching for resources for assessing LL&N in our intending students and finding it hard. There are resources out there but they basically tell you how to develop your own resources and I'm not a teacher in this field but I still need to compile resources for our institute and the industries of Beauty Therapy and Fashion Design. Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated, cheers

I have only had a little play on this site, but I liked what I saw. For the literacy component there is reading, writing and spelling & grammar activities for the participants to 'play'. The great thing is the learner gets instant feedback as to whether they are correct or not.
